Carolyn Jess Starts Recycling Initiative at Brazoswood High School

Brazoswood High School sophomore Carolyn Jess is not new to initiating “go green” projects wherever she attends school. Carolyn started a recycling program at Rasco Middle School, and carried the program to Lake Jackson Intermediate. She now brings the same motivation to protect the environment to her large high school campus.

After being informed about a $3,000 Green Bag Grant by Terri Cardwell, City of Lake Jackson volunteer coordinator, Carolyn researched the number of classrooms and most strategic locations to place recycling bins and applied. The statewide environmental organization awarded her the grant using funds from H-E-B and Central Market.

The grant paid for 310 recycling bins and reusable bags. With the help of her environmental science teacher, Heather Koenning, and two environmental science classes, each classroom at Brazoswood now has a bin for disposing of recyclable items and a process for monitoring the bins and properly disposing of the waste.

Carolyn Jess said of the initiative, “It’s something that needs to happen and it’s good for everyone.”

BISD is very proud of Carolyn’s efforts and resourcefulness along with her teacher Mrs. Koenning and other students committed to going green wherever they are.
