1968 Graduate of Brazosport High
After graduation from Brazosport High School, where he served as the president of the student body, he attended Southern Methodist University. He graduated with a major in social studies and then attended Perkins School of Theology and earned a Master of Theology degree. He was ordained as a Methodist minister in 1978.
While serving as minister of South Bluff UMC in Corpus Christi, he helped establish the Corpus Christi Metro Ministries. Today it is a multi-million dollar inter-denominational service armed for the needy.
Since 1986, Dr. Bryant has been the Director of the Walk to Emmaus, a highly structured 3-day spiritual retreat, and its offshoot for youth, Chrysalis. Under his direction, the Walk to Emmaus has grown from 40 to 150 centers worldwide and has become self supporting. In 1997, he became the World Editor and Publisher of the Upper Room, a magazine of daily devotions, published quarterly. The Upper Room now puts out 55 editions in 45 languages in over 30 countries, in addition to other magazines, books and Bible studies. In 2003, Steve was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree by Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky.
